The Green Knight Economic Development Corporation is proud to announce that it has awarded approximately $100,000 in community grants and academic scholarships in 2022.
The community grants were awarded to 18 organizations within the Wind Gap, Pen Argyl, and Plainfield Township communities that reflect the ideals of community service, environmental stewardship or community development. Six graduating seniors within the Pen Argyl Area School District who are seeking higher education were recently awarded $4000 academic scholarships.
These six students add to the existing thirteen currently enrolled college students who have received academic scholarships within the past three years. The GKEDC has awarded more than sixty academic scholarships since the start of this program approximately 20 years ago.
The funds to support the community grants and academic scholarships are generated through the profits from the sale of the green electricity that is generated at the Green Knight Energy Center located at the Grand Central Landfill. The methane that is generated at the landfill by the decomposition of the waste is collected and sent to the Green Knight Energy Center where it is burned in the turbines which rotate the generators which produce the electricity.
It is anticipated that both the community grant and academic scholarship programs will be continued in 2023. Visit GKEDC.orgfor announcements regarding the opening of both programs in 2023.
